I don't mind non responses either, but it would probably save the writers a lot of unnecessary worry and the agents a lot of status queries if the non response policy was clear. Many agencies have auto-responses to emails that say if you don't hear from us in 2/4/6/8 weeks, then assume we've passed on your submission. I like that because the writer is assured his or her has reached its destination, and the agent doesn't have to do anything if he or she isn't interested in representing the author.

Ms. Jote,

I want to thank you for your excellent advice about plot spoilers. I revealed mine in my query, and several agents have responded positively.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I'm sorry I disagree. Most agents I've queried either ask for more or issue a simple one or two sentence form rejection. I have had queries get lost. One agent's blogs stated, "I'm now caught up on queries. If you haven't receive a response, I didn't get it so resend," and another who wound up asking for a partial told me in her reply she never received my first attempt. If someone has a policy of only replying if they're interested I usually pass on querying them.
Just an alternate viewpoint. : )

More than half of my rejections were by non-response. It is a trend because of the outrageous number of queries sent via email. It didn't bother me a bit. If I were an agent, I'd probably just hit the delete button too. Typically, I heard from agents wanting more material right away--sometimes within an hour.

There is a website called QueryTracker that lets writers see an agent's response time and shows the percentage of queries rejected by non-response. This takes a lot of the guess work out of the submission process. I recommend it to all writers in the query stage.
